What is Probate and When is it Needed?
Probate is the legal process of administering a person’s estate after they pass away. This involves identifying and valuing their assets (such as property, savings, and possessions), settling any outstanding debts or taxes, and distributing what remains to the beneficiaries named in their will. Probate is usually required when the deceased owned property or held significant assets in their sole name. In some cases—particularly where assets are jointly owned or the estate is small—probate may not be necessary. However, many financial institutions will require a Grant of Probate (or Letters of Administration if there is no will) before releasing funds
